Beyond One Year is a site "for
everyone who knows that even children who can walk and talk
still need breastmilk". It is maintained by Kathy Orlinsky,
who has a Ph.D. in biology.
This unique and useful site has five
sections of articles and a list of well-selected links to
related sites.
"New Moms" includes Kathy's
excellent articles, "Ten Reasons To Breastfeed Your
Child" and "The Truth About All That Baby Gear".
Both of these essays offer essential information for new and
prospective parents.
The Researched Articles offer
"scientific evidence that proves what we've always known -
human beings need human milk." Here Kathy offers her
thoughtful, well-documented essays on breast cancer, dental
carries. immunological protection, intelligence, malocclusion,
osteoporosis, and visual acuity.
The Breastfeeding section includes several
articles on extended breastfeeding, public breastfeeding,
weaning, nursing for comfort, and breast "kneading".
Kathy's wonderful essay "Why I Decided Not to Wean"
concludes "I hope that by the time she weans, she'll be old
enough to always remember nursing. This is such a precious time
for both of us, it would be nice if when she has children,
she'll be able to tell them, 'I remember how special nursing
was'."
The Submissions section offers visitors a
chance to contribute "articles, personal stories, or
opinion pieces". There are currently 9 articles on extended
breastfeeding. Don't miss the lovely essay "You can do
that?" by Amy Scott.
The "Non-breastfeeding Issues"
section offers an excellent description of unschooling, and a
delightful "Unschooler's Quiz". Kathy plans to add
more articles to this section soon.
As the introduction states, "If you
enjoy breastfeeding a toddler or older child and would like to
hear about other women who feel the same, or if you would like
to keep breastfeeding your toddler, but have no support from
family or friends, this is the web site for you."
